| | | | Shannon Kayak Challenge 2009 | | | | | | This enormous challenge saw 12 kayakers, 5 of whom have a spinal cord injury, take on the Irish waterways by kayaking from Carrick on Shannon to Killaloe, covering a distance of 200 kilometres over a 7-day period. All funds raised enable Spinal Injuries Ireland to fulfil a number of key initiatives crucial to providing the best service possible for our members nationwide, and will help us to maintain our support services to those who have sustained a spinal cord injury and their families.
The weather conditions for this challenge were by far the harshest yet. On some days the winds were near gale force in strength. On more than one occasion it looked as if the weather would win, but thanks to the support and watchful eye of our fantastic back up team of Gillian Bradshaw, Caroline Whooley, Declan Breen and Kevin Bradshaw, the kayakers paddled safely into Killaloe Harbour. The kayak challenge would not have been possible without the support from Sandycove Kayaking Club. Conor Walsh and Peter Nolan did an amazing job covering safety on the water and Elaine Glynn, Siobhan McMahon and Trish Hayes provided valuable buddy support for the challenge.
Huge thanks also goes to the Army lads, Kevin Dempsey and Gerry Cahill, who went way beyond the call of duty transporting and driving the team each day and hauling kayaks in and out of the truck. Having battled our way down the Shannon to see tables laid out by the guys with sandwiches and hot tea really lifted our spirits each day.
Thanks again to everyone who made this challenge possible. | | | | | | | | |
