'Spinal News' Magazine

Spinal News is a quarterly magazine produced by Spinal Injuries Ireland.
It is a primary source of information for all our members. The magazine offers those who return home highly informative and regular articles on issues related to the disability sector. The articles within the magazine include medial information, as well as information on equipment, travel, community and personal profiles.

The most important aspect of the magazine is that it allows those with spinal cord injuries to read about how others with the same disabilities are achieving many things on a personal level. It also gives people an opportunity to air their own concerns and views.

Summer Ball 2007

The Ballroom in the Four Seasons Hotel was the stunning venue for the annual Spinal Injuries Summer Ball on May 26th where over 300 of Dublin's most glamorous gathered to enjoy a fantastic evening to help raise much needed funds to support the work of Spinal Injuries Ireland. The night got underway when Ryan Tubridy, acting as MC for the event, welcomed all the guests and encouraged them to give generously. Colm Whooley spoke passionately about the reality of living with a spinal cord injury, having himself become a wheelchair user after a motor-bike accident over twenty years ago left him paralysed.

The pace of the night turned up a notch when Andrew Gunne from CB Richard Ellis enticed the guests to bid generously on a number of fantastic auction items.

For the second year in a row, Chris de Burgh, who along with his wife Diane is Patron of Spinal Injuries Ireland, wowed the revellers when he took to the stage with the Camembert Quartet and performed some of his old favourites including Spanish Train and Patricia the Stripper.

The Ball Committee, Diane de Burgh, Rosalind Kilduff, Mary O'Kennedy, Ralph McMahon and Philip Quinlan were delighted with the success of the night and the icing on the cake was that the money raised far exceeded all expectations!

Paddy Slattery - Launch of Album

Paddy Slattery who sustained a spinal cord injury in a RTA (Road Traffic Accident) eight years ago launched his album 'Stand & Deliver' in the Tullamore Court Hotel on the 29th June 2006. Following the launch Paddy gave a free concert in the National Rehabilitation Hospital for both staff and patients on Thursday 6th July 2006.

Self Defence Program

Spinal Injuries Ireland held its second Jeet Kune Do Self Defence weekend recently in the National Rehabilitation Hospital, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The Program continued the principle of introducing real self defense techniques to people who have sustained a spinal cord injury using the principles of Jeet Kune Do.

Sifu Martin O'Neill from the Clannn Eireann Jeet Kune Do in Lurgan travelled down to the National Rehabilitation Hospital to put those attending through their paces and presented each student with a Certificate of Achievement. Martin was assisted by level one Apprentice Instructors in Jeet Kune Do, Declan Breen and Colm Whooley

The students attending the program travelled from Galway, Kilkenny and Dublin. The proposal is to develop the program to include real life scenarios and more sparring in the future.

Irish Fighter magazine featured the first Jeet Kune Do Self Defence weekend with photos in the latest edition on the newsstands. For details of the next Jeet Kune Do Self Defence weekend contact Spinal Injuries Ireland on 01 2355317

The 1st annual Assembly of Delegates and 3rd Congress of ESCIF took place from 18 April - 20 April 2007 at the Manfred Sauer Foundation in Lobbach near Heidelberg.Delegates from Albania, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherland, Scotland, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland took part.

Following the Delegates arrival on Wednesday 18th April 2007 a welcome was given by Daniel Joggi, President of ESCIF and by Manfred Sauer, founder of the Manfred Sauer Foundation. The Delegates then relaxed and enjoyed an evening meal prepared by the excellent restaurant in the centre and sampled the beer produced by the centre's own brewery!

On Thursday a presentation and discussion of Nutrition, creativity and awareness of the body was given by Kevin Schultes of the Manfred Sauer Foundation. The delegates had the opportunity to look around the "excellent" facility that was opened in 2006. The centre was financed by the Foundation and is designed to offer physical and psychological rehabilitation to people recovering from the trauma of a serious accident or illness. Personnel from the centre will present some of the ideas and practices that guide their work.

the Executive after the Resignation of Esther Peris (Spain), elected the Auditors, approved the 2007 budget and admitted new members. The Friday morning was spent discussing the results of the information-gathering project on acute care and primary rehabilitation by Jane Horsewell, Vice-President of ESCIF. This was very successful and a more detailed report will be posted about this on the ESCIF web-site soon. Daniel Joggi formally closed the Congress and then a sight-seeing trip to Heidelberg was enjoyed by some of the Delegates.

ESCIF would like to thank the warm and friendly hospitality extended to the Delegates and members of ESCIF by the Manfred Sauer Foundation. More information about the Manfred Sauer Foundation can be found on www.manfredsauer.co.uk. Next years Assembly and Annual Congress will be held in Croatia.
