Medical card holders are entitled to a range of health services free of charge. These include doctors, drugs and hospital services. People with a spinal cord injury are not automatically entitled to a medical card. Most people need to have means below a certain level in order to get a medical card. (See weekly income limit) Apply to your local health centre or health board. If you are refused you may appeal to the Chief Executive Officer of the Health Board. When appealing it is important to put in all your outgoing expenses ie mortgage, heating, transport.
The Drug Payment Scheme(DPS)
Under the Drugs Payment Scheme an individual or family has to pay the first €85 per month of expenses incurred for all approved prescribed drugs, medicines and appliances for use by that person or his/her family in that month.Under the DPS, no individual or family will have to pay more than €85 in any calendar month for approved medicines and appliances for use by that person or his/her family in that month. | | | ITEMS AGREED BY HEALTH BOARDS, NRH AND SPINAL INJURIES IRELAND

The items below are also available under the Medical Card and Drugs Payment Scheme. For those who are in receipt of the Medical Card you must contact your Public Health Nurse. For those who are in receipt of the drugs payment scheme you must contact Joan Carthy at SII office 01-2355317 so that Joan can liaise with the Drugs Payment Board on your behalf.

Medical Card: Holders of a Medical Card are entitled to a range of health services free of charge, including G.P. visits, hospitalisation and medications. To qualify you have to pass a means test or be 70 years or over, or qualify on "medical grounds". Medical card holders may be able to get expenses to travel to and from out-patient services/day hospitals but this varies considerably from one area to the next. All medical cards are now issued by the HSE.

Allowances For child under 16 year €26.00 For dependant over 16 years with no income maintained by applicant €27.00
For outgoings on house (rent etc) in excess of €26.00. Reasonable expenses necessarily incurred in travelling to work in excess of €23.00. | | |
