Factsheets - Medical Card
and Drugs Payment Scheme

Medical Card

Medical card holders are entitled to a range of health services free of charge. These include doctors, drugs and hospital services. People with a spinal cord injury are not automatically entitled to a medical card. Most people need to have means below a certain level in order to get a medical card. (See weekly income limit) Apply to your local health centre or health board. If you are refused you may appeal to the Chief Executive Officer of the Health Board. When appealing it is important to put in all your outgoing expenses ie mortgage, heating, transport.

The Drug Payment Scheme(DPS)

Under the Drugs Payment Scheme an individual or family has to pay the first €85 per month of expenses incurred for all approved prescribed drugs, medicines and appliances for use by that person or his/her family in that month.Under the DPS, no individual or family will have to pay more than €85 in any calendar month for approved medicines and appliances for use by that person or his/her family in that month.

Medical Card: Holders of a Medical Card are entitled to a range of health services free of charge, including G.P. visits, hospitalisation and medications. To qualify you have to pass a means test or be 70 years or over, or qualify on "medical grounds". Medical card holders may be able to get expenses to travel to and from out-patient services/day hospitals but this varies considerably from one area to the next.
